Unyielding

Overview

The Bloomberg newsletter “Unyielding” examines the continuing pressure on global markets arising from the US–Iran standoff, elevated energy prices and a deepening US Treasury selloff. It also covers major developments in artificial intelligence, corporate finance, India and China, along with SpaceX’s latest Starship milestone.

Details

US Treasury selloff: US government bonds declined further as uncertainty surrounding US–Iran negotiations intensified. The 10-year Treasury yield reached its highest level in 19 years.
Energy-market pressure: The continuing geopolitical dispute threatens to prolong the global energy shock. Oil prices remained elevated despite Saudi Arabia restoring approximately half the capacity of a major cross-country pipeline.
US–Iran negotiations: Iranian officials reportedly expressed pessimism about reaching an agreement with Washington before the US midterm elections in November.
AMD–World Labs deal: Advanced Micro Devices agreed to acquire World Labs, the AI startup founded by researcher Fei-Fei Li, for approximately $8.2 billion in stock.
Strategic significance for AMD: The acquisition will give AMD access to prominent AI researchers and advanced models that could contribute to the development of its future chips.
Nvidia AI security: Nvidia introduced a two-layer AI security system designed to prevent autonomous AI agents from behaving unexpectedly or accessing systems without appropriate controls.
Nvidia share buyback: The company increased its share-repurchase authorisation by a record $150 billion, supporting a rise in its shares.
SoftBank’s AI financing: SoftBank completed a record $11.1 billion high-yield bond transaction to support Masayoshi Son’s extensive investments in artificial intelligence.
Record borrowing costs: SoftBank offered unusually high returns to investors, with its longest-dated bonds yielding 9.75%. The transaction illustrates how the AI investment boom is reshaping global credit markets.
Tata Sons restructuring proposal: Tata Trusts reportedly proposed merging Tata Sons with two unlisted subsidiaries as a possible way to avoid a mandatory public listing.
Adani settlement: Companies belonging to the Adani Group settled a regulatory investigation concerning alleged violations of minimum public-shareholding requirements.
China’s economic support: China’s State Council announced that it would examine additional measures to stabilise the property market, strengthen domestic demand and promote employment.
Weak Chinese consumption: The proposed measures follow another period of weaker-than-expected consumption growth, which reportedly slowed to nearly zero.
Starship milestone: SpaceX’s Starship successfully deployed 26 upgraded Starlink satellites, marking the first time the spacecraft placed satellites into orbit.
Flight outcome: After completing the deployment, Starship splashed down near Hawaii approximately three hours into a mission that had originally been planned to last around ten hours.
